Book Review: The Name-Bearer

Natalia Hernandez has created something truly special here. With a diverse cast and richly-imagined world, it has been a surprise stand-out for me from the past year!

A BRIEF SUMMARY

The story follows the journey of the Name-Bearer, whose life takes a dramatic turn when she fails in her sacred duty to name the future monarch. Branded a traitor, she seeks refuge among an elite group of warrior women, where she discovers friendship, love, and her true destiny. Her new mission is to train, lay low, and (in ten years time) seek out the true future king, so that he can be brought before the Flowers of Prophecy to be named as the new monarch. If she can find him, he is destined to bring peace to their land.

WHAT I LOVED

In Natalia's captivating debut novel, The Name-Bearer, we’re immediately swept into a lush and vibrant world filled with magic and—as a bonus—badass warrior women training for their callings, all while the story tackles profound themes like identity and destiny. I could not get over the rich and immersive worldbuilding in this book, drawing inspiration from a blend of Latin American cultures. From the vivid descriptions of food and art to the colorful landscapes and dynamic characters, Hernandez paints a beautiful picture with her words, fully transporting us to a world teeming with life and magic. The inclusion of a diverse cast of characters adds depth and authenticity, with queer representation seamlessly woven into the story, which we all know I appreciate.

At its heart, The Name-Bearer is about self-discovery and empowerment, as the protagonist navigates the complexities of her identity and embraces her true self. Through her journey, we’re reminded of the importance of embracing our destiny, but also of the value of friendship and self-compassion. Themes of found family and camaraderie resonate deeply, as the Name-Bearer forms bonds with her fellow warrior women and embarks on a quest to right the wrongs of her past.

Natalia's writing is both lyrical and evocative, bringing this fictional world to life in a way that feels effortless. Truly, it was a pleasure to read.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I give this one 5/5 stars.

The Name-Bearer is an impressive debut that showcases Natalia's talent as a storyteller. With its compelling characters, lush worldbuilding, and powerful themes, this is a book that you’ll be thinking about long after you’ve finished. Whether you're a fan of fantasy, adventure, or stories of self-discovery, The Name-Bearer is well worth the read. I’ve already finished book two and am eagerly awaiting publication of the third.

Happy reading!
